Every year, thousands of people turn to donor sperm to help build the families they've been dreaming of. Whether they are individuals and/or couples navigating infertility, same-sex couples, or single parents by choice, sperm donation offers a path to parenthood that was once impossible.
For those considering becoming sperm donors, the opportunity to make a family's dream come true, while earning supplemental income, can feel like an easy decision. That said, it's worth understanding that sperm donation is a commitment. The process is thorough, the screening is rigorous, and participation is ongoing. These realities are not meant to discourage but rather help prospective donors make a more informed decision about whether participation is right for them.
At MySpermBank, we recognize that sperm donation is a meaningful undertaking for prospective families and donors alike, which is why transparency and ethical donor practices are central to our process. So, if you're curious about what becoming a sperm donor entails, here's an honest, behind-the-scenes look at the full experience.
Who Can Become a Sperm Donor?
Before diving into the process, you should know whether you meet the basic requirements. MySpermBank accepts donors who are between the ages of 21 and 39, in good general health, and are currently students or young professionals legally authorized to work in the United States. Donors must live, work, or attend school within a reasonable distance of one of our clinic locations. Currently, we are located in Houston, TX; Chicago, IL; Gurnee, IL; and Philadelphia, PA. If accepted, you'll need to be able to commit roughly one to two hours per week and remain in the program for at least six to twelve months. If that sounds manageable, you may be ready to send in an initial application.
Step-By-Step Process of Becoming a Sperm Donor
From application to approval, the full screening process typically takes two to four months. While that may sound lengthy, MySpermBank works to make that timeline as manageable as possible with flexible scheduling and dedicated donor coordinators to guide you through each step. Additionally, all testing and screening is completely free for prospective donors, allowing you to gain detailed insights about your reproductive and genetic health that you might not have otherwise had.
Step 1: Online Application
The process begins with a short online application— three to five minutes—that covers basic personal information and helps determine whether you meet the initial eligibility criteria. It's low stakes and easy to complete from your phone or laptop.
Step 2: Initial Semen Analysis
If your application clears, you'll be invited to visit a clinic to provide your first sample. This gives the medical team a chance to evaluate sperm count, motility, and overall quality.
Step 3: Medical Screening
If the sample meets program standards, prospective donors move on to a comprehensive medical evaluation. This includes a full physical exam and reproductive health assessment, along with blood and urine testing for a range of infectious diseases, including HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, CMV, and HTLV. These evaluations are conducted by reproductive specialists and are designed to protect both donors and the families they'll help build.
Step 4: Genetic Screening
All MySpermBank donors complete genetic testing, which includes a chromosome analysis, screening more than 500 genes associated with specific inherited conditions, and a Genetic Risk Assessment (GRA), in which a certified genetic counselor reviews at least three generations of your personal and family medical history.
Step 5: Psychological Evaluation
Every donor completes a professional psychological assessment conducted by a trained mental health professional. The assessment evaluates emotional stability, motivation for donation, and whether donors have an informed understanding of what participation involves.
Step 6: Background and Identity Verification
Before final acceptance, MySpermBank conducts a federal criminal background check, verifies your identity, and confirms your educational background. This is standard across all accepted donors and is part of the program's commitment to ethical, responsible practices.
What Happens After You're Approved?
Once approved, donors visit the clinic on a regular schedule, generally committing one to two hours per week for at least 6 to 12 months.
MySpermBank offers some of the most competitive compensation in the industry, with donors earning between $150 and $175 per approved donation. Payment is issued promptly after each visit. Depending on donation frequency, sample quality, and program type, many donors earn between $1,200 and $2,000 per month. Donors who participate in our Identified Donor Program can earn an additional $5,000 to $15,000 per family they donate to.
Privacy Options & Safeguards
Sperm donation can carry long-term implications for both donors and donor-conceived families, which is why privacy, identity disclosure, and ethical oversight are important parts of the process.
MySpermBank offers three disclosure pathways to accommodate different levels of openness:
Identified Donor — You are introduced to the intended parent(s) before any samples are provided.
Early Disclosure Donor — Your identity is shared with the family once a live birth is reported.
Open-Identification Donor — Your identity may be released to donor-conceived individuals once they reach age 18.
All identity disclosures are managed securely and confidentially by MySpermBank. Additionally, all donations are tracked and recorded, ensuring the number of families created from any single donor follows strict national and international guidelines.
